Pesquisas sobre el descubrimiento de la Antártida: tras la estela del Williams of Blyth y del San Telmo (1819-1821)
Resumen
Este artículo es la síntesis de un trabajo de investigación iniciado en los años 90 sobre el naufragio del San Telmo, navío de guerra de 74 cañones español que desapareció en 1819 al Sur del Cabo de Hornos en su viaje de Cádiz a Lima. Su objetivo es la realización de un examen crítico de las fuentes británicas que se refieren a los viajes del bergantín Williams y de los testimonios del capitán William Smith para esclarecer las circunstancias aún oscuras de uno de los grandes naufragios de la Marina Española. Se trata también, en un segundo plano, de arrojar luz sobre unos acontecimientos históricos de gran transcendencia ya que están ligados al descubrimiento de la Antártida.
