Supplicatory Processions with Christian Relics: Origins, Development, and Ritual Function in the Medieval Euro-Mediterranean World
Resumen
This paper examines supplicatory processions with Christian relics in the medieval Euro-Mediterranean world. It traces the emergence of these practices in Late Antiquity in connection with changing attitudes towards relics, the development of Christian liturgical forms, and Old Testament models. Focusing on both the Eastern Mediterranean and the Latin West, the paper adopts a comparative approach to analyse how relic processions were deployed in moments of danger and calamity, and how their use varied across local contexts. Rather than assuming direct transmission or uniform development, it highlights the diversity of these practices and their adaptation to specific sociocultural settings. The paper analyses the sociocultural roles of relic processions, particularly the capacity of these “charismatic objects” to structure collective action, reinforce social cohesion, and articulate authority.
